What’s in The Name?

Finn MacCool, also known as Fionn Mac Cumhaill in Gaelic, is one of the greatest heroes in Irish mythology.

The Salmon of Knowledge

As a young man, Finn studied under the poet Finnegas, who had spent years trying to catch the legendary Salmon of Knowledge. One day, Finnegas finally caught it and he sent young Finn to cook it but warned him not to eat any. While cooking, Finn burned his thumb on the fish and instinctively put it in his mouth to ease the pain. The second his thumb touched his mouth, he absorbed all of the salmon’s wisdom.

Leader of the Fianna

Finn became the leader of the Fianna, an elite band of warriors who served the High King of Ireland. To join the Fianna, warriors had to pass incredible tests, including defending themselves against 9 warriors with only a shield while standing in a waist deep hole and running through a forest without breaking a twig or disturbing their braided hair.

The Giant’s Causeway

One of Finn’s arch rivals was the Scottish giant Benandonner. Finn built a causeway of stepping stones across the Irish Sea to fight him, but when he saw how big Benandonner was, he retreated home to Ireland.

When returning, he knew Benandonner would come looking for him, so his clever wife Sadhbh disguised Finn as a baby. When Benandonner came looking and saw the “baby,” he reasoned that if the baby was this large, the father must be gigantic.

Petrified, Benandonner fled back to Scotland, destroying the causeway behind him. The remaining stones of the causeway form the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland today.
